GSG 05-25 WORKERS’ MEMORIAL DAY

24/April/2025

Description

The National Commemoration for Workers’ Memorial Day will take place on Monday, 28th April 2025 at 9:30 a.m. in the Garden of Remembrance, Dublin. The commemoration will be led by ICTU and supported by Government, IBEC, the Health and Safety Authority and CIF.

It is an important day for Trade Union members worldwide as we remember those killed or injured in the workplace. In Ireland last year, 34 people were killed in work related incidents, with 9 people killed so far this year. In addition to these stark figures, thousands of people have been injured or suffered ill health as a result of work.

Therefore we must continue to fight for the living, taking every opportunity to remind employers of their legal obligations to ensure the highest standard of safety  in the workplace together with regular reviews of safety protocols with worker representatives.

In this regard all CWU Branches are requested to highlight health and safety issues in the workplace and the following suggestions are examples of what Branches can do:

  • Request Safety Representatives to carry out Safety Inspections or highlight safety issues at all work locations.
  • Hold a minute’s silence to remember all colleagues who have died.
  • Post pictures of activities or events and share them on social media
  • Please use the hashtag #WorkersMemorialDay, #WMD25 and tag relevant organisations such as the HSA, CIF and IBEC

The CWU Seminar is in Dun Laoghaire at which we will mark the occasion.

Going forward, the Union will be to the fore in ensuring the highest possible safety standards in employments and will remain committed to advocating for safer working conditions for all employees. Each one of us has the responsibility to highlight issues of concern relating to health and safety. All of our members are entitled to work in a safe workplace and their families are entitled to expect that when they go to work each day that they are entitled to return to them safely.

Better and safer in a Union
