GSG 22-24 Time Off Facilities for CWU Representatives

22/July/2024

Description

As a voluntary organisation the CWU is very reliant on securing agreed release arrangements with employers to enable our volunteer representatives to perform work on behalf of the Union and members. In the main we have very good arrangements in place at all companies. This enables our activists deal with issues locally, attend conferences/seminars, National Executive Council meetings etc.

These facilities, while most certainly required, are not always conceded by employers and for this reason they should not be taken for granted. It is vital these facilities are used strictly for the sole purpose of conducting union business and not for personal use.

Any deviation from this is unacceptable as it undermines the Union’s reputation with members and with the employer, with whom the release arrangements for all CWU Officers are agreed.

Failure to adhere to the agreed release arrangements may result in the company withdrawing the facility and in serious cases may lead to disciplinary proceedings being initiated by the company.

Representatives are also reminded that actions which discredit or undermine the Union, may lead to the matter being dealt with under the CWU Code of Conduct.

The National Executive Council has directed me to issue clear directions to all CWU representatives on the importance of full compliance and adherence to agreements governing release facilities provided by employers.

While we expect the employers to provide paid release facilities and adhere to existing agreements for this, it is imperative that we all do the same.

Your assistance with regards to the above is very much appreciated.
